Ending Explained
In the climactic ending of Steven Spielberg's "Jaws," Chief Martin Brody, marine biologist Matt Hooper, and seasoned shark hunter Quint confront the great white shark that has been terrorizing Amity Island. After several intense encounters on Quint's boat, the Orca, the shark's relentless attacks cause significant damage to the vessel. Quint is ultimately killed by the shark in a brutal scene, leaving Brody and Hooper to fend for themselves. Hooper attempts to use a shark cage to inject the shark with a lethal dose of strychnine, but the plan fails, and he narrowly escapes by hiding on the ocean floor.
The final showdown occurs with Brody alone on the sinking Orca. Using his resourcefulness, Brody manages to jam a pressurized scuba tank into the shark's mouth. As the shark charges at him, Brody shoots the tank with a rifle, causing it to explode and killing the shark. The movie concludes with Brody and Hooper, who resurfaces after the explosion, swimming back to shore on makeshift flotation devices, signaling the end of the terror and a return to safety.
