Ending Explained
In the film's climax, Caroline discovers that the elderly couple, Violet and Ben, are not who they seem. Throughout the movie, Caroline, a hospice nurse, has been caring for Ben, who appears to be paralyzed and unable to speak. She uncovers that Violet and Ben are actually the spirits of two African-American servants, Mama Cecile and Papa Justify, who practiced Hoodoo. They have been using a spell to transfer their souls into younger bodies to achieve immortality. Caroline attempts to save Ben by using a Hoodoo spell she believes will protect them. However, she is tricked by Violet, who reveals that the spell is actually a soul-transference ritual. In a shocking twist, Caroline's soul is transferred into Violet's aging body, while Violet's soul takes over Caroline's young body. Similarly, Ben's soul, which was originally in the body of Luke, the family lawyer, is transferred into the paralyzed body of Ben, while Luke's soul takes over Ben's young body. The film ends with Caroline, now trapped in Violet's old body, unable to communicate the truth. The new 'Caroline' and 'Luke' prepare to continue their lives, leaving the audience with a chilling realization of the perpetual cycle of soul transference and the true power of Hoodoo.
